Rei Hotoda will become the orchestra’s new Music Director Las Vegas Philharmonic Music Director Designate

Las Vegas has a new star—this time, on the podium. The Las Vegas Philharmonic just announced that acclaimed conductor Rei Hotoda will become the orchestra’s new Music Director, officially stepping into the role in July 2026.

The news dropped in dramatic fashion at a recent Philharmonic concert, when Leonard Slatkin, the orchestra’s artistic consultant (and a legend in his own right), brought Hotoda to the stage for a surprise encore. The audience got a taste of her energy as she led the musicians through a fiery rendition of Bizet’s Les Toreadors—and the room erupted.

Hotoda’s appointment comes after an unusually short search. The orchestra had planned a two-year process, but her chemistry with the musicians and audience during her May 2025 appearance sealed the deal early. “Rei was not only a fan favorite,” said Executive Director Alice Sauro, “but incredibly engaging with our musicians. We knew she was the one.”

Known for her passionate style and modern approach to orchestral leadership, Hotoda will guide the Philharmonic through a new era of creativity, collaboration, and community outreach. Her first official season will be announced on Valentine’s Day 2026, and she’s already promising a lineup that blends classical favorites with fresh, contemporary voices.

“It’s an honor to join the Las Vegas Philharmonic,” Hotoda said. “From my very first rehearsal, I felt the orchestra’s spirit and the city’s incredible energy. My family and I can’t wait to call Las Vegas home.”

Hotoda, who currently also leads the Fresno Philharmonic, is known nationally for her dynamic programming and advocacy for living composers. Expect her tenure in Vegas to bring bold new sounds—and probably a few surprises.

The Philharmonic wraps up its 27th season this year with a packed lineup, including A Very Vegas Christmas on December 6, The Music of John Williams in March, and Pictures at an Exhibition in May—conducted by Hotoda herself.
