Vegas-based “Battle-Born Beard Coalition” takes the top prize for this month’s weirdest event. Naturally, uniquely bearded sideshow performer John Shaw will be front and center.
This one might under other circumstances fall under the “Only In Vegas” category. However, I’m no expert on the subject, so it really might be a “thing”. Nevertheless, I was surprised and awed when entertainer John Shaw notified me that he’d be judging and performing this weekend at the Sin City Beard Coalition’s Battle Born Beard & Mustache Competition.
Not knowing what in the actual f*ck this event was, I followed the link that John provided, and here’s what I discovered:

– Natural Mustache
– Styled Mustache
– Chops/Sideburns
– Whaler/Amish
– Goatee
– Partial Freestyle
– Full Beard Freestyle
– Veterans
– Craft Beard Creative
– Craft Beard Realistic
– Business beard 0-4”
– Full Beard 4-8”
– Full Beard 8-12”
– Full Beard over 12”
– Full Beard with Styled Mustache
I have to admit to being stymied by the “kids” category. But this photo posted by member “Lori Ann” on Sin City Beard Coaltion‘s Facebook page might provide clues:
Participants in the day’s events will compete for a locker’s worth of prizes. The organizers state that there “will be amazing raffle prizes, including tickets to great shows on and off the strip, autographed memorabilia, one-of-a-kind handmade items, and so much more to come!” Those interested in entering can register here.
The event, while meant as a way to have fun and make new friends, is first and foremost a fundraiser for charity. Recipients include LAS VEGAS RIDE FOR KIDS, a regular event that benefits the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. Another beneficiary is XTREME COUTURE, a foundation fronted by wrestler Randy Couture. XTREME COUTURE helps combat veterans in need.
There will be a number of treasures up for auction. One is a coveted poster donated by super-magician David Blaine, who performs at Resorts World.
Regular readers might remember John Shaw from my write-ups of LATE NIGHT MAGIC at Alexis Park Resort. He’s a regular performer at ZAK BAGAN’S HAUNTED MUSEUM and has been seen on The Tonight Show, Pawn Stars, and as a “Satanic consultant” on Ghost Adventures.
According to John’s bio, he “first started developing his trademark beard style back in the late 80s and has been reinventing his unique look throughout the years.” But once you see his shocking feats, his facial hair won’t be the only thing you’ll remember. John will entertain competitors and guests throughout the day.
The Second Annual BATTLE BORN BEARD AND MUSTACHE COMPETITION will take place inside the Veil Pavilion of Silverton Casino on Saturday, March 25th. Start time is noon and is expected to run for seven hours. Click here for more details. Silverton Casino is located at 3333 Blue Diamond Road in Las Vegas.
