Raunchy psychedelic entertainment troupe swings both ways and in every direction to show its pride…
ABSINTHE was one of the first post-pandemic productions to return
Who thought it could happen? More than a decade ago, upstart production company SPIEGELWORLD managed to challenge Cirque du Soleil‘s hold on the Strip. Its tools were uncensored humor, astonishing physical feats, equally stunning bodies, and a can of whoop-ass. Spiegelworld tossed those elements and more into a century-old Belgian tent, unleashed the Green Fairy and watched as ABSINTHE became the new King of Las Vegas.
SUPERFRICO at Cosmopolitan has inspired an Atlantic City counterpart
Now in its thirteenth year, ABSINTHE‘s naughty antics have spawned four Sin City children with a fifth (DiscoShow) to be delivered at The Linq next summer. With eccentric visionary Ross Mollison as their daddy, this is just the beginning of a global entertainment family:
“We’ve spent the past fifteen years creating a new form of live entertainment and using this new artform to completely revolutionize all the elements of hospitality – food, drink, art, architecture – that other producers reduce to window dressing.”
Ross Mollison oversees construction of The Hook at Caesars Atlantic City
If you saw our April article on ABSINTHE‘s twelfth anniversary, you know that Mollison has expanded his reach to include two psychedelic Italian dining outlets, a ski lodge speakeasy, a secret Yacht Club, the Horse Dive Bar, a bizarrely-named burger joint (NO PANTS), an adult playland (Green Fairy Garden) and an entire circus town (Nipton, California).
Last month, Mollison’s new venture THE HOOK made its debut at Caesars Atlantic City. Presented inside an entirely refurbished venue at the historic Warner Theater, THE HOOK brings Spiegelworld back to the east coast (insiders know that ABSINTHE began on a pier in New York City).
Percussionist Steve Weiss sets the beat at OPM
Directed by Cal McCrystal, who overhauled Cosmopolitan’s OPM last fall, THE HOOK hopes to go beyond anything achieved by Spiegelworld in the past:
“We’ve scoured the globe to find performers with the skill, imagination, and ambition to match our vision to create a production like nothing ever seen before. We’re using the whole gambit of circus, comedy, theater, variety, and music to create something that has evolved beyond performers performing on a stage. We can’t wait for people to experience it.”
There’s so much happening in the Spiegel-world that they’ve created a YouTube Channel to chronicle it all. Shot with a keen sense of humor and a slightly-twisted perspective, SPIEGELWORLDTV covers everything from new acts and holiday greetings to the rebirth of Nipton as the company’s new global headquarters.
The latest series is called “Welcome to Circus Town”. The show will highlight Spiegelworld’s efforts in turning Nipton into a Circus Town. Guests will be able to stay overnight (count me in!) and performers can take a step back from the city to work on their acts. Take a look at Episode One:
