‘ONE NIGHT STANDS’ – Must-Sees and Freebies

Our latest round-up of single performances is hot and juicy…

What do you get out of single-night shows? A one-of-a-kind experience that no hyped-up residency can replicate, that’s what. Spontaneous audience interaction, an unpredictable setlist, unique takes on standards, brand-new material that may never be seen or heard again….it’s all worth the adventure. And nearly always at wallet-friendly prices.

David Tatlock (above, center) has been thrilling patrons of Ellis Island’s THE FRONT YARD this year with free sbows on Friday nights. His SOUL JUICE BAND is funktastic to the max. Tatlock has another musical project named ELECTRIC CHURCH, a more compact group with the same funky pedigree.

ELECTRIC CHURCH played at Jive Turkey last week and has been hitting up intimate venues like the former GAMBIT, downtown’s Container Park, and the glossy BEVERLY THEATER for the past few years.

Find out where ELECTRIC CHURCH and THE SOUL JUICE BAND perform in the upcoming weeks by following David here. You can also enjoy SOUL JUICE BAND‘s full performance at 2022’s LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL festival by clicking here.

Last November, piano prodigy Philip Fortenberry presented a career retrospective entitled 60 YEARS ON THE BENCH. Those fortunate to attend the concert discovered (or already knew) that Community Lutheran Church at 3720 East Tropicana Avenue is an incredible venue for live shows (yes, really!).

It just so happens that some iconic Vegas talents are members and regular performers at Community Lutheran Church. They include Keith Thompson and vocalist Tony Arias.

CLC hosts a regular series entitled Spotlight Cabaret. The next edition will feature country star Michael Peterson (left) in “A Night To Remember”. Peterson’s representative Shelley Thomas tells VEGAS 411 that Mr. Peterson will share “a great story of his career in country music, and performing for the military around the world.

Michael Peterson: A NIGHT TO REMEMBER will perform on February 28th at 7 pm. Tickets cost $20 and can be reserved at cur8.com/projects/5thSunday. Peterson will also perform at The Composers Showcase of Las Vegas, a popular Nevada nonprofit featuring all original music on Wednesday, Feb 26, at 9:30 p.m.  Tickets are available at thecomposershowcase.com.

EDIE: QUEEN of the DESERT – Zumanity’s “Mistress of Sensuality” EDIE returns to the Vegas stage with the all-new production QUEEN OF THE DESERT. Part tribute to the 30th Anniversary cult classic film “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert,” Edie “takes us on a scorching journey out West to the barren badlands she now calls home.”

“With her high-kicking, feverish choreography and steamy storytelling through song and dance, Edie turns up the heat with this red-hot new show.” The former Oregonian promises to “have audiences burning up from her tales of living in the hottest place on earth! (But it’s a dry heat.)”

The Australian “Priscilla” film spawned a popular Broadway musical (with a brief run at Venetian Resort) and an American remake. TO WONG FU, THANKS FOR EVERYTHING, JULIE NEWMAR starred superstars Patrick Swayze, John Leguizamo, and Wesley Snipes in drag. The three relatively short gentlemen pale(d) next to Edie, whose “legs go on forever.”

EDIE: QUEEN OF THE DESERT plays on February 13th at QUEEN BAR beginning at 8 pm. Tickets are $25 and can be ordered here. The venue is located at 1215 S. Las Vegas Boulevard.

From a queen of the desert to a prince of soulful pop, Chadwick Johnson sells out every venue he plays. The handsome urban cowboy returns to Myron’s at Smith Center this March with a new show, The Sound of Soul.

The production features selections from Johnson’s recent album releases, highlighting music from legends who have inspired his artistry: Stevie Wonder, George Michael, Chris Stapleton, Bonnie Raitt, Donny Hathaway, and more. The Sound of Soul performs on Tuesday, March 18th at 7 pm. Tickets start at $33.40 and can be reserved here.

The Composers Room at the historic Commercial Center has quickly become a go-to destination for wonderful entertainment, delicious food, and a vintage Vegas atmosphere.

A full slate of free shows in the Tavern and ticketed performances in its Showroom ensure that all guests will find something to love.

Bay Area native Dana Daye (left) will host a pre-Valentine’s Day dance party in the Tavern on February 11th, beginning at 7:30 pm. The songbird has been hard at work on a new collection of recordings, collaborating with the “Don of Vinyl” Stevie Dunham,

Mr. Dunham, whom we profiled here, is the big man at Street Corner Records. Fans were fortunate when he took to the Showroom Stage for TCR’s 12 HOURS OF CHRISTMAS event and belted out a few. We hear on good authority that he may join Ms. Daye on the 11th, too.

A full month of free entertainment is on tap in the Tavern, including favorites HighRise Duo, Jeff Carlson, Headstrong Butterflies, and Jimmy Mulidore. In the Showroom, ticketed offerings include powerhouse Monique Maffei Hester, These Guys Worldwide, “The Sit-In with Kelly Clinton“, Zonya de Laguardia, and the grand return of Ruby Lewis and Dan Ellis on February 13th. Click here for information and tickets.

Terrific singer and karaoke hostess queen Shiela Wright is a frequent guest at Keith Thompson’s Piano Party. The bi-weekly showcase also performs at The Composer’s Room.

On Saturday, February 8th, Ms. Wright performs Still Hate Loving You, a Valentines-themed show at The Phoenix Bar and Lounge:

“It’s gonna be an amazing show! My brilliant guests are Brenda Mandabach and her angelic voice from Headstrong Butterflies, Russell Nielson on the violin, a must-see. The captivating voice of Shane Petersen and the fabulous Pedro!!!! …oh and me!”

The showtime for Still Hate Loving You is 6 pm. The Phoenix Bar and Lounge is located at 4213 W. Sahara Avenue. There is no cover and parking is free. Dining and cocktails will be available during the show.
