DISCO DIVAS launched earlier this year, coincidentally around the time of featured singer Tina Turner’s passing. Perhaps to avoid perceptions of being a money grab, the show tactfully peppered Turner’s name among impersonations of celebs like Cher and Gloria Gaynor. Now that the dust has settled a bit, DISCO DIVAS is receiving a rebranding.
Live entertainment is an art form, but it’s also a business. Sometimes it’s tough to strike a balance between artistic vision and commercial viability. That’s why we’ve seen shows like iLuminate, AWAKENING, and Spiegelworld’s OPM undergo major revamps.
In other circumstances, a simple revision to an advertising campaign can do the trick. PIANO MAN‘s posters now focus on the celebrities being saluted (Billy Joel and Elton John) instead of Broadway star Kyle Martin. As a result, Martin is reporting consistently sold-out performances.
FLASHBACK: Tina Turner & Friends is the new name for DISCO DIVAS. The show is a tribute to female stars of disco’s heyday. In addition to Gaynor and Cher, Donna Summer, Diana Ross, and Olivia Newton-John are given the FLASHBACK treatment. A rotating cast of solid performers struts their stuff in songs like “Private Dancer”, “Last Dance”, and “Physical”.
A soundtrack album was released on August 15th, and features performances by cast members Patrice Petway, Annie Lyon, Kim Wood, and Elyse Clardy. Ms. Petway is also the producer and director of FLASHBACK. It’s unknown at this time if the cast recording will also receive a new title. The creator and Executive Producer of FLASHBACK: Tina Turner & Friends is Pete Housley. Regarding the show’s premiere, Housley stated “Tina’s electrifying presence and powerhouse vocals not only defined the disco era but also shattered stereotypes and paved the way for powerful women in the music industry. Her undeniable talent and unwavering determination made her an icon, inspiring generations with her music, energy, and empowering spirit.”
