’48 HOUR Film Project’ – A Competition In Touch with Time

Exciting filmmaker competition returns to downtown’s Beverly Theater this month…

Las Vegas is the “City of Entertainment”, and it’s quickly becoming “Hollywood 2.0”. We’ve covered the growth of Sin City cinema in numerous articles. Now VEGAS 411 has learned of another exciting movement…
Are you a filmmaker looking to expand your network and meet other talented individuals in the industry? Look no further than our upcoming 48-hour film networking event! Join us as we bring together a diverse group of creative minds for a weekend of collaboration, innovation, and inspiration.
Las Vegas 48 Hour Film Project is the type of challenge featured in TV competitions like HELL’S KITCHEN, LOVE IT OR LIST IT and DESIGN STAR . Teams of artists have two days to create a short film from scratch. Competitors receive their assignments at a kick-off gathering then quickly get to work.
The competition began in Washington D.C. in 2001 and has spread to more than 100 cities throughout the world. For the second year in a row, the LV48HR will be held at The Beverly Theater:

Teams will have forty-eight hours to write, film, and edit their project, ensuring they meet all requirements. Finished films are screened in public and then judged in several categories. “Best Picture” recipients from each city move on to the global Filmapalooza competition in 2025. The overall winner is eligible for a spot at the Cannes Film Festival in France.
Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just starting out, this event is the perfect opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals, exchange ideas, and forge new friendships. As part of the event, participants will have the unique opportunity to work together in teams to create a short film in just 48 hours.
Before the actual competition, there are numerous gatherings to prepare entrants. The first is a mixer at Millenium Fandom Bar on October 2nd (click here for event details). Millenium Fandom Bar is a haven for film enthusiasts of all kinds, but especially those into fantasy and cosplay.  It’s located between Fremont Street and the Gateway District on S. Las Vegas Boulevard.
Other mixers and a workshop will precede the Official Kickoff at UnCommons on Friday, November 1st. Minutes before the Official Filmmaking Period begins, the city producer will announce the three required elements for that competition. The elements vary from city to city, but all teams in each location will receive the same elements.
From that point, teams have forty-eight hours to complete their assignment. The finished film must be submitted before 6:30 pm on November 3rd. Judges will then view and review each submission. A list of rules and requirements is listed here.
Public screenings of each entry will take place on November 20th at The Beverly Theater beginning at 4 pm. Winners will be revealed at an Awards Ceremony later that evening. You can get details on all the scheduled activities by heading here.
Las Vegas 48HR Film Project began in 2005. It has taken place nearly every year since, with 2020’s edition being done virtually. The producer for this year’s competition is Fran Vuitton, who recently joined this writer in an episode of David Rosen’s PIECING IT TOGETHER podcast, a show by and for cinephiles.
