Do the Las Vegas Aces has what it takes to win the 2021 WNBA Title?
The Doubts
That’s the million-dollar question. People are rumbling about the acquisitions of Riquna Williams and Chelsea Gray, buzzing about the return of Liz Cambage. Here’s the problem- they lost their opening game to the Seattle Storm, the same team who swept them in the WNBA Finals last season.
The opening game wasn’t even close. The Aces lost 97-83 after Riquna Williams and Chelsea Gray failed to make an impact. The two women combined for a total of seven rebounds and seven assists, but it wasn’t enough. Dearica Hamby couldn’t come up to scratch either.
The Comeback
The Aces recovered a few nights later, though, when they crushed the Storm 96-80. And then they beat the Seattle Storm 95-92 in a game that saw Jackie Young, A’ja Wilson, Riquna Williams, Chelsey Gray, and Kelsey Plum all put up 10 points or more. Add that to 18 rebounds between Wilson and Liz Cambage, and you can start to see how powerful the team is when they started to gel. That puts the Aces up 2-1 this year against the Seattle Storm and legitimately gives the team some hope of beating them in the playoffs too. Will the Storm be their biggest challenge, though, or will another team be their downfall in the postseason?
The Competition
For example, they are 0-2 against the Connecticut Suns this season. The Suns have the third-best record in the league. Another example would be the Minnesota Lynx, the fourth-ranked team in the league and 2-0 against the Aces so far this season. The first of the games was a nail-biter that the Lynx won by one measly point, but in the second game, the Aces saw a 10 point loss. This is another team that the Aces will need to worry about in the playoffs.
How Far Will the Aces Go?
So, how far will the Aces go this year? Honestly, the team’s 2-5 record against teams in the top 6 is very concerning. The fact that two of these five games were blowouts is even more concerning. The Aces have the pieces in place to be a superteam, but they may not have the right chemistry yet.
