While The Las Vegas Aces were hoping to make a playoff push this season, all that might have just come unraveled after star center, Liz Cambage, announced she would be missing the season due to fears of Covid-19. Cambage s agent later told The Associated Press that the concern was due to a preexisting condition the young star had.
Liz is a generational talent, and we are going to miss her this year on the court and in the locker room, Dan Padover , Aces General Manager said in a statement.
The news comes on the heels of The Aces also losing Kelsey Plum to a torn Achilles. It is believed however that the free agent signings of Alex Bently and Angel McCoughtry will help get the team through this tough time. Some also believe that backup center, A ja Wilson, Dearica Pamby, and Carolyn Sword will see more playing time in their absence.
“In the evaluation of Liz Cambage’s health and pre-existing risk factors with her team doctor, we believe her to be at high risk for severe illness if she contracts COVID-19 in participating this WNBA season,” Cambage’s agent, Allison Galer, told The Associated Press on Saturday night. “We are awaiting the league’s determination based on an independent physician panel.”
Cambage put up rockstar numbers in her first season with the aces, averaging 15,9 points per game and 8.2 rebounds. Her effort, along with her teammates, was enough to go 21-13 and make the postseason. Unfortunately for the team, they lost to The Washington Mystics in the second round.
