Believe it or not, two-time Cup Series champion and defending champion, Kyle Busch is still winless in the 2020 season. As if that wasn’t bad enough, there are only eight races left for the Las Vegas native to lock himself into the postseason. Of course, he could always get in on points and has an excellent chance of doing so, but Busch just seems out of form at this point in his career.
Maybe that has to do with the COVID-19 break the sport took, or it could be the fact that current protocols don’t allow for teams to practice or qualify, but Busch seems to be suffering either way. Keep in mind that this was a guy that won five races last year, including the season finale at Homestead Miami Speedway, and you can see just how far he has fallen off.
Another thing that makes Busch’s winless streak so puzzling is that his fellow Joe Gibbs Racing drivers, Denny Hamlin and Martin Truex Jr, have both notched wins this season. In fact, Denny Hamlin has won four races so far this season, including The Daytona 500, and thus has 40 points guaranteed to him for the start of the playoffs.
Busch however, will most likely only get in on points unless he can win in the final eight races of the season and only has one playoff point to his name. That’s also going to make it hard for him to advance to the round of 12, the round of eight or even the championship four in Phoenix Arizona. In all honesty, this is probably the worst possible scenario he has ever entered the postseason in.
“We’re struggling right now. There’s just no speed in our race cars for some reason. I don’t know what’s going on,” Busch said.
Although Busch has been struggling this season and is in danger of losing his streak of consecutive years with a victory, he has put up pretty impressive numbers this year. In fact, Busch currently stands at eight top-fives and ten top-tens in 18 races, which leaves him tenth in points currently.
Still, Busch, who has over 200 combined wins in The Cup Series, Xfinity Series, and Gander Outdoor truck series, may go without a season victory for the first time ever! Just remember, that’s a 15-year streak that would come to an end.
In the end, there is not a fan in Rowdy nation that doesn’t want to see this absolute warrior of a man overcome his past luck and lock himself into the playoffs. He’s honestly just too good of a driver not to make noise this season and play at least some kind of role in this season’s playoffs.
