New year, new Las Vegas Aces. Can they win the championship this time around?

The Las Vegas Aces are making noise during the offseason, and while a lot of this has to do with Mark Davis buying the organization from MGM International, they are making other moves as well.  The Aces seem to have so much momentum going for them they’re a legitimate contender for the 2021 title. Seriously, with what this team did last year in the playoffs and the changes they have made, the sky is the limit.

Of course, everything starts with the fact that center Liz Cambage and Guard Kelsey Plum are returning to action, which is sure to bring a new level of defense to the team. And then there’s Dearica Hamby, who just signed a one-year extension. She averaged over 13 points a game last year and had a pretty decent record from the 3-point line. Again, it was a team effort, and Hamby was only one part of that team, but she definitely made her presence felt every time. That’s what the Aces need in 2021.

Another player that will bring a new level of defense to the Aces is guard Riquna  Williams, who the Aces signed in free agency.

“This is about my process and what I wanted in the future,” Gray told ESPN. “I had amazing years in L.A. The organization became family, and we won a championship. But I felt that it was time for something new. That’s why I was full-steam ahead with this free-agency process, and I felt Vegas was the best fit for me now and in the future.

Now, the Aces’ biggest offseason loss is Kayla McBride, who abruptly decided to sign with the Minnesota Lynx earlier in the year. This might be bad news because McBride is one of the best guards in the league, but her numbers are down from where they should be, so perhaps it isn’t that much of a loss. Finally, the Aces lost former starter Lyndsey Allen, who was signed to the team’s practice squad but was traded to the Indiana Fever for a second-round pick.

In the end, the Aces look like championship contenders this season. A’ja Wilson, Liz Cambage, Kelsey Plum, Riquna Williams, Chelsea Grey and Dearica Hamby are all great players. The Aces also have a bench with a lot of depth that can come up clutch in key games. This is the year to believe in the Las Vegas Aces!
