After nearly two decades off the court, the United States Basketball League (USBL) is making a comeback — and Las Vegas is getting a front-row seat. Known for its gritty energy and iconic alumni, the “League of Opportunity” will tip off a 24-game season in March 2026, reviving a spring basketball tradition that once sent more than 150 players to the NBA.
A Legacy That Launched Careers
Founded in 1985 by the late Daniel Meisenheimer, the USBL carved out a unique lane in American basketball — part developmental league, part community celebration. It was the place where legends like Muggsy Bogues, Spud Webb, Manute Bol, and Anthony Mason sharpened their game before heading to the big show.
The league even drew crossover stars like Nancy Lieberman and Randy Moss, turning its small arenas into showcases of pure athletic creativity.
“This league made history once before — and now we’re going to do it again,” said Cliff Levingston, two-time NBA champion and now Head Coach and GM of the Las Vegas Stars, one of the USBL’s 2026 teams.
The 2026 Season: A New Era Begins
Fifteen franchises have already signed on — including the Las Vegas Stars, Seattle Super Hawks, Baltimore Rhythm, San Diego Sharks, and New York Phoenix — with more cities expected to join soon.
Commissioner Dennis Truax calls the relaunch “a revival of passion and opportunity,” while Co-Executive Director Ingrid Hutt says the goal is simple: “to create unforgettable game-night experiences for fans and players alike.”
Vegas Basketball Keeps Rising
With pro basketball heating up in the desert, the USBL’s arrival adds another layer to Las Vegas’ fast-growing sports scene. The Stars promise affordable entertainment, community events, and a front-row look at tomorrow’s NBA talent — all while reviving the spirit of American spring basketball.
