Last Week in Las Vegas Sports (Oct 16 – 22)

Rival NFL team calls out the Las Vegas Raiders, the Aces go back-to-back, and the Golden Knights remain undefeated. It’s time for last week in Las Vegas sports (Oct 16 – 22).

#5 Las Vegas Raiders drop to 3-4 after loss to Chicago Bears

Las Vegas Raiders,Source. FacebookThe Las Vegas Raiders took on the Chicago Bears Sunday in a 30-12 beatdown. Las Vegas struggled on offense from the beginning with Brian Hoyer and never got into the endzone. Instead, the Raiders had to settle for field goals from Daniel Carlson, who put two through the upright for six points.

Hoyer went 17 of 32 for 129 yards and two interceptions, which resulted in him getting benched in favor of Aidan O’Connell. The rookie completed 10 of his 13 passes for 75 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. This is a much better performance than Hoyer and could mean he gets the nod next week against the Lions.

Jakobi Myers caught the lone touchdown pass of the afternoon for a quick 19-yard score. Despite that highlight, the Raiders have little to be proud of from Sunday’s game. The defense allowed 30 points in another disappointing showing for that side of the ball. Nothing seems to have changed with this team at all.

#4 Jimmy Garoppolo could return against the Detriot Lions

Jimmy Garoppolo sat out Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears with a back injury he suffered a week ago. The hit was brutal and resulted in Garoppolo going to the hospital. Despite this setback, Garoppolo is supposedly expected back next Monday against the Detroit Lions. This is according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The news comes after a disappointing performance by both Aidan O’Connell and Brian Hoyer that has to have fans worried. Of course, O’Connell did much better, but he doesn’t seem ready for the starting job yet. His interception late in the game proves that.

Garoppolo coming back is probably not good news for the Raiders, either, however. He only has seven touchdowns and eight interceptions in four starts, and his other numbers aren’t much better. His longest pass to date is a 32-yarder.

#3 Las Vegas Golden Knights crush Chicago to remain undefeated

No one can stop the Las Vegas Golden Knights right now, and that trend continued Saturday night against the Chicago Blackhawks. Jonathan Marchessault, William Karlsson, Paul Cotter, Nicholas Roy, and Mark Stone scored goals in the victory. The team even mounted a 3-1 onslaught in the final period to secure the victory.

Las Vegas and Chicago were tied up 2-2 heading into the final period, leaving Golden Knights fans on edge. Despite the two sides being evenly matched, Stone, Cotter, and Roy all scored in the last period to give the Golden Knights the victory. They are now 6-0 in the first stretch of the season and one of the best teams in the league.

Adin Hill served as goalie and only allowed three goals in 24 shots to pass him. As a result, This puts Hill 4-0 as a starter, which is very impressive when you consider he has made 96 saves in four games this season. That’s a total of 24 saves per game.

#2 NFL team calls out Jimmy Garoppolo

There’s something about the Las Vegas Raiders that doesn’t inspire much confidence. Maybe that has to do with a shaky 3-3 record. Or the fact that they have one of the worst offenses in the league statistically, but there’s no getting around how bad it looks. Other teams are even catching on to the Raiders’ weaknesses and exploring them.

According to one team that spoke with Hondo Carptener about their game with the Raiders:  “You have to take away what teams do best. With all those weapons on offense, we decided to invest in stopping Josh Jacobs by stacking the box, and not if it wasn’t a run, subsequently using all those guys up front to rattle Jimmy so he gets rid of it. I don’t think he is confident that he can get the ball down there.”

Unfortunately, the anonymous team member hit the nail on the head with that one. Garoppolo’s longest throw in the season’s first six games remains 32 yards. He also sits with seven touchdowns to eight interceptions and is out with a back injury.

#1 The Las Vegas Aces win the 2023 WNBA Title after an epic battle with Liberty

The Las Vegas Aces are now back-to-back WNBA Champions following their 70-69 victory over the New York Liberty on Wednesday. Las Vegas held a 70-64 lead with only a few minutes to go, but the Liberty responded with an offensive onslaught. In fact, Courtney Vandersloot hit a critical three and then stole the ball for two more points.

That brought the game down to one play and forced the Aces to focus on strategy. This resulted in Las Vegas milking the clock for all it was worth before calling a timeout. They then pitched the ball to A’ja Wilson for a quick shot that didn’t go. The Liberty then tried a foul line jumper to take the win but couldn’t get the bucket.

“It’s not easy, as you know. This is what it’s all about,” Wilson said after becoming WNBA champion for the second time. “Not a lot of people get to do it. To be short-handed and win is amazing. It makes the win that much better. It’s hard to get back to the Finals to win again.”
