Last Week in Las Vegas Sports (June 5 – 11)

What public support looks like for the new Athletics stadium, Joshua Jacobs posts another cryptic tweet, and more last week in Las Vegas Sports (June 5 – 11).

#4 New poll shows very little support for Oakland Athletics stadium

It’s no secret that the Athletics are already facing a multitude of hurdles, and they just seem to keep coming. This time it’s public opinion standing in the way of their new stadium, with a solid 86% of its Vegas residents opposing it.

The A’s aren’t wanted here, and definitely not for the price of the stadium. Between that and the team’s horrible play this season, it looks like Las Vegas could be getting a dud here.

#3 Carson Wentz named as a possible backup for Jimmy Grappollo in 2023

The Jimmy Garoppollo saga is dominating the headlines for the Raiders, and speculation is turning to backup options. Of course, all of this depends on whether Garoppollo can pass a physical,  but there is some chance he won’t.

This leads to the aforementioned replacement talks, which have gone from Sam Darnold to Carson Wentz. The choice might be the only thing that saves Josh McDaniels career if Garoppollo doesn’t pass his physical.

“If the Raiders have to look elsewhere, free agent Carson Wentz would seem to be the best option,” ESPN wrote on Thursday. “Raiders pass game coordinator Scott Turner has experience with Wentz as the Washington Commanders’ offensive coordinator last season, for what it’s worth.”

#2 Joshua Jacob’s situation gets more interesting after latest tweet

The Las Vegas Raiders need Joshua Jacobs in 2023, but they aren’t showing it. In fact, the organization is planning to franchise tag their running back, which keeps him there for $10 million. Jacobs tried to renegotiate his contract before this development, but they didn’t come to an agreement. The team now has until mid-July to make a final decision.

Fast forward to last week, and Jacobs posted a cryptic tweet online that seems to allude to him leaving. If true, Jacobs is very much justified in his actions after having his fifth-year option declined and facing the possibility of getting franchise tagged. It will be interesting to see if this changes the Raiders’ negotiating strategy.

“Sometimes it’s not about you,” he said in a tweet on Saturday. “We gotta do it for the ones after us.”

The Aces are no longer undefeated after a 94-77 loss to the Connecticut Suns in their eighth game. A’ja Wilson, Candance Parker, Chelsea Grey, and Kelsey Plum all got held below 20 points. The Aces also struggled with rebounds and assists, making it difficult to build momentum.

The Aces turned around a few days later and defeated the Chicago Sky 93-80 in another strong showing. A’ja Wilson put up 21 points, ten rebounds, and three assists in the victory against their former playoff opponent. Candance Parker put up 10 points, seven assists, and six rebounds, while Chelsea Grey put up 21 points of her own.
