Last week in Las Vegas Sports (Feb 19-25)

A big name might be leaving the Las Vegas Raiders, Kyle Busch notches win #65 in the Truck Series, and the Golden Knights are taking losses in more ways than one. Let’s talk about last week’s Las Vegas sports news.

#5 Las Vegas Golden Knights lose Mark Stone to injury

The Las Vegas Golden Knights are dealing with a slew of injuries and just added another one to the pile last week. This time, Mark Stone is down with an upper-body injury after a game against the  Predators. The team later announced that Stone would be week to week due to his injuries.

“I don’t have an idea on his return date,” Cassidy said regarding the injury. “The medical team will update us as we go along. We’re going to miss him, obviously, but we’ve got to focus on the task at hand.”

Jack Eichel is also on the bench due to a knee injury but is expected to return sometime soon. Both of these injuries are bad news for Las Vegas.

#4 Las Vegas Raiders announce full coaching staff for the 2024 season

The Las Vegas Raiders have a lot to prove in 2024, which is why the moves they make now are essential. From quarterback to defensive coordinator, they need a significant overhaul. The team stepped towards that last week by releasing their official coaching staff list for 2024.

Some highlights include Luke Getsy as offensive coordinator, Rich Scangarello as quarterback coach, and Patrick Graham as defensive coordinator. Marvin Lewis is taking over assistant coaching duties and has already worked alongside head coach Antonio Pierce at Arizona State.

This is a new start for the Raiders, and they need to take advantage of it. It’s very promising that Pierce is a former defensive coordinator, which is a side of the ball that the Raiders need help with.

#3 Kyle Busch notches win #65 in the Gander Moutain Outdoor truck series at Atlanta

Kyle Busch held off the field at Atlanta to earn his 65th victory in the NASCAR Truck Series. The Las Vegas native had to block several pass attempts, including a shove by Ty Majeski to move him out of the way. Instead, Busch got a shove from the outside line and rode it to the checkered flag.

This win marks Busch’s seventh win at Atlanta and is his 65th career win overall in the series. Busch put on quite the show for the crowd and had this to say after the win.

“Yo Rowdy Nation, what’s up, here we are in Victory Lane today, winning in the Truck Series race,” he said. “Hey, at Atlanta, there’s been a lot of history here winning races at Atlanta from Billy Ballew days, all the way into KBM days, and now in the Spire days. So, thanks to everybody at Chevrolet, thanks to Rowdy Nation, appreciate everybody and all their support, this is awesome to get out here.

Busch followed that up on Sunday with a third-place finish after coming up short against Daniel Saurez and Ryan Blaney. The third-place finish is still a great start to the season for Busch and shows just how competitive he will be this year.

#2 Golden Knights lose overtime shootout to the Ottawa Senators

The rocky road continues for the Las Vegas Golden Knights after losing to the Senators 4-3 in an overtime shootout. Chandler Stephenson led the way with two goals and four shots on goal that evening. Jonathon Marchessault also scored a goal for Las Vegas and helped Stephenson with an assist.

Another interesting stat is that Las Vegas didn’t allow a score in the first period, which is rare for them. That changed in the second period when the Senators matched the Golden Knights with two goals. Both shots got past Logan Thompson and left the Senators within one point of tying up the game.

Things went downhill from there after the two teams fought through an extra period and still couldn’t score. This meant things would come down to a shootout and pitted Thompson against Anton Forsberg for the victory.

Thompson let one slide during the shootout and lost the game for Las Vegas in a nailbitter. They now have a record of 32-19-7 and are six games behind the Canucks. They are also only one or two games ahead of the Oilers. Add the fact that many of the Golden Knights team are injured, and you have a recipe for disaster.

#1 Las Vegas Raiders might get rid of Hunter Renfrow

Hunter Renfrow is one of the most overlooked talents on the Raiders roster, but that might change. Renfrow is now coming up in trade rumors with the Cowboys. Some say that the Raiders are currently shopping Renfrow around after an impressive season by Tre Tucker.

Renfrow would be a significant loss, but they could build around their other stars. The Raiders already have Davantae Adams, Jacobi Meyers, and Michael Mayer, an embarrassment of riches. Tre Tucker and Zamir White could also benefit the passing game.

Renfrow is just a guy who has been constantly overlooked by management for the last three years, and it doesn’t look like that will change.
