What Happened in Las Vegas Sports Last Week (Mar 22 – 28)

The Raiders made quite a few key moves in free agency, and one quarterback took a pay cut. Follow it all as we count down last week in Las Vegas sports.

#5 Kyle Busch promises to be the best

Kyle Busch shocked the world last season when he failed to qualify for the final eight in the playoffs, leaving some to wonder whether he was starting to lose his iron grip on the series. Seriously though, Busch has gone from at least five wins a season, to barely managing one,  a serious downgrade for the two-time Champion. Busch did manage to notch his third top ten over the weekend at Atlanta, and he seems to have high praise for his new team.

It was nice to have that speed in our race car that we could perform like that to be ourselves and be in a position to have a good run,” he said. We re trying to figure all of this out together right now and make sure that we can continue to improve as the year goes along in order to be the best when it matters most,

#4 Sugar Rogers announces new book

Sugar Rodgers did her part to help fill the gaping hole left by Liz Cambage and Kelsey Plum in 2020, and that’s only one small chapter of her illustrious career. In fact, she averaged over ten points in two seasons of her career and has served as a decent substitute in key situations. Of course, she is nowhere near the numbers she used to post up, but she is someone who can add needed depth to a team that needs a rest or a momentum shift. In May, she will become an author when her book “You better call me Sugar’ My journey from the hood to the hardwood.

“I m an introvert, but I just want to give people a look inside my life, and maybe they can understand why I am so quiet, said Rodgers. I want kids to understand what I went through.

The book explores many struggles throughout Rodgers’s life, including taking care of her ill mother, watching family members go to jail, and losing several key figures in her life. She literally couch-surfed through her teens and used basketball as an oasis to get away from the chaos

#3 Experts doubt wisdome of Kenyan Drake signing

Running back Kenyan Drake signed a two-year deal worth 11 million dollars with the Las Vegas Raiders, and while the move brings a lot of versatility to the team’s offense, some are thinking the move was a mistake. Maybe that has to do with the fact that they are paying so much money for a backup running back, but, there just seems to be a lot wrong with this. Almost like the Raiders are second-guessing themselves and taking a step back.

Las Vegas was reportedly attracted to Drake s ability to produce in the passing game. While he certainly has gotten the opportunity to make plays as a pass-catcher throughout his five-year career with the Dolphins and Cardinals, his grades don t match the hype. Drake ranks 51st among 57 qualifying running backs in receiving grade since he entered the NFL in 2016, a major factor in him owning a single-season career-best WAR ranking of 24th (2018) at the position.

#2 Willie Snead signs one-year deal

Willie Snead has signed a one-year deal with the Las Vegas Raiders and while the financial details of that deal aren’t known at this time, the wide receiver is a nice addition to the new offense. In fact, between Brandon Edwards and Henry Ruggs on the team, Derek Carr is going to have a lot of options to play with. Now, that doesn’t mean Snead will solve all of the Raider’s problems on offense, especially with him not being that great of a receiver recently, but he could help the Raiders out in key situations.

I m just grateful to have this opportunity. When it happened, I got a phone call from Coach Gruden and we were able to talk for a little bit. Just the vision that he has for this offense… I was just really excited about possibly being here in Vegas and it s been an awesome experience since I stepped into the building.

#1 Marcus Mariota restructures deal with Raiders

The quarterback controversy in Las Vegas is finally over, and Derek Carr will start for the organization going forward. While teammate Marcus Mariota had a chance to enter free agency or be traded somewhere, he instead decided to restructure his 11 million dollar deal in order to be Carr’s backup. Reports indicate that Mariota is taking a steep pay cut to stay with the organization, and one has to wonder why. The Raiders have already proven time after time that they prefer Carr, and this should be no different.

“I think at the end of the day, I just focus on controlling what I can control, and that’s the product on the field,” he said. “So, every single day I wake up, I train, I get ready to go and at the end of the day, we’re very blessed to play this game for a living. A lot of us make a really good amount of money and for me, I just love playing the game. And the excitement, the opportunity to be a Raider, kind of overcame all of that. To be here in Vegas, to be a part of this organization meant a lot more to me and I’m excited to be able to come back.”

Maybe it was the fact that he fought so hard to earn that starting job last season against the Chargers. He even went in for a running touchdown. Of course, he also had an interception that cost the team in the worst possible way, but he went down fighting.
