1. The good: A’ja wilson and Angel McCoughtry
These two women were a godsend this season, propelling the Las Vegas Aces all the way to finals. Keep in mind that this is only one year removed from their humiliating sweep in the first round by the Washington Mystics, and you can see just how pivotal getting back into the playoffs was to this group.
And for the most part, McCoughtry and Wilson lead the charge back to the playoffs, with Wilson averaging 20 points a game and McCoughtry putting up 14 PPG.
2. The bad: Losing Liz Cambage and Kelsey Plum during the preseason
There was a lot of hurt to go around this season and the first knockout punch was losing Liz Camabge and Kelsey Plum during the preseason. Cambage ended up opting out of playing due to Covid-19 concerns and Plum went down with a foot injury.
Unfortunately for the Aces, they would feel the absence of Plum and Cambage throughout much of the year, including the WNBA finals. In fact, some could probably argue that having either of these two women on the court throughout the finals would have positively affected the results. Maybe it would have even tipped the odds of winning that elusive championship in their favor.
In the end, it will never be known what Cambage and Plum could have done on that court during that series, but one can imagine that it would have produced a title.
3. The ugly: Losing in the finals to the Seattle Storm
How could a season that started off so good end up in a disaster showcased for the world to see in the WNBA Finals? Seriously though, the team, already without Plum and Cambage, adjusted their whole game towards McCoughtry Wilson and a supporting cast, but still managed to lose in the finals. How do you get that unlucky?
Think about it! A ja Wilson, Angel McCoughtry, Dearica Hamby, Jackie Young, Kayla McBride, and company put up exemplary performances. These women deserve respect for how they navigated the season and how they pushed their way through the playoffs.
However, their loss to the Connecticut Sun in the finals was embarrassing and discouraging to watch after all we d seen. It was as if Rocky balboa didn t defeat Apollo Creed and just got his face smashed in.
