Last Week in Las Vegas Sports (May 29 – June 5)

Las Vegas Raiders reportedly didn’t tell Derek Carr about the Colin Kaepernick tryout, A’ja Wilson wins Western Conference player of the week, and everything else you may have missed last week in Las Vegas sports.

#4 Las Vegas Raiders didn’t tell Derek Carr about Colin Kaepernick tryout beforehand

The Las Vegas Raiders hosted a workout with Colin Kaepernick last Wednesday and apparently no one told Derek Carr about it beforehand. Head Coach, Josh McDaniels revealed that little tidbit during an interview about the Kaepernick workout and claimed that Carr knows where he stands with the team.  This comes after Carr signed a three-year $120.5 million contract with the Raiders during the offseason.

I think Derek’s pretty comfortable with where he’s at,” McDaniels said of the recently extended Carr. “I think he knows who he is for us, and I know he knows how I feel about him, how we feel about him. I don’t think that’s really a big thing to Derek at this point.”

#3 Las Vegas Raiders blocked from interviewing New England Patriots coach

Josh McDaniels became the new Head Coach of The Las Vegas Raiders during the offseason and wasted no time in making key changes. While the acquisition of Davante Adams might be the first thing to come to mind, Las Vegas also picked up several former New England Patriots coaches to join their team. You could even say that the Raiders poached talent from the Patriots intentionally.

They tried to do the same with Patriots Tight End and Full Back coach Nick Caley but New England blocked the interview from happening.

“Nick Caley’s role seems to be a little in flux,” Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reported. “I’d expect he’ll have more responsibility in ’22. The Patriots blocked Caley from talking to the Raiders, and his role in New England this fall could dictate whether he stays put or goes to Las Vegas in ’23.”

#2 A ja Wilson wins Western Conference Player of the Week for record eighth time!

A’ja Wilson has been an instrumental part of the Las Vegas Aces’ success this season, and that’s part of why she is already racking up hardware. The former WNBA MVP was named Western Conference Player of the Week for the eighth time, a franchise record for Las Vegas. She won the honor after averaging 23 points, 11 rebounds, and making over 50% of her field goals.

Wilson also won Western Conference Player of the Month honors in May. This comes while The Las Vegas Aces are amid their best season as a team and are being led by new Head Coach, Becky Hammon. Maybe Hammon is fueling Wilson’s success? The whole team seems to be stronger due to her leadership.

#1 Darren Waller next in line for a contract extension with the Las Vegas Raiders?

It’s no secret that Darren Waller has been a pivotal part of the Las Vegas Raiders’ offense, and the team would be smart to lock him in past the 2022 season. Las Vegas has already done this with Derek Carr, Davantae Adams, and Max Crosby, which has led to speculation that Waller may be next.

“My agent is working on that,” Waller said when asked about a contract extension. “I understand it, but I know if I focus on it too much, it could take away from my job and learning a new system and just continuing to try to elevate and take care of my body in the right way. I try to focus on those things…”
