Last Week in Las Vegas Sports (June 28 – July 4)

Las Vegas sports took some victories and defeats last week. Let’s revisit some of them and break down all the dirty details!

#4 Possible SummerSlam Title match revealed

According to Dave Melzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Brock Lesnar versus Bobby Lashley is off the table at this point, and WWE is thinking of instead considering The Fiend or Goldberg as an opponent. Maybe WWE could even do a triple threat match so Lashley can be protected in defeat and either The Fiend or Goldberg could win the title.  The sky is the limit right now in WWE.

In fact, with a possible John Cena return, Edge versus Seth Rollins versus Roman Reigns for the title, and this match with the Fiend, this might be one of the company’s best Summerslams in a while. Allegiant Stadium is the only place to hold a show like this.

#3 Davonte Adams heading to Las Vegas Raiders?

Is Davonte Adams coming to the Las Vegas Raiders? He seems interested in a reunion with former Fresno  State teammate Derek Carr.  And the Raiders are in need of star wide receiver after Nelson Agholor left for greener pastures, which could make Adams a good replacement. Will it happen, though?

“I love Derek to death,” Adams said. “We’ve got a great friendship and we still communicate really, really consistently. He’s one of my best friends. Obviously, it would be a dream to be able to play with him, but I’m a Packer now. Until that point when we make that decision, I guess we just got to, we’ll see what happens.”

#2 Alec Martinez admits to playing in postseason with a broken foot

Alec Martinez was a key defensive player for the Las Vegas Golden Knights throughout the 2021 season and continued that trend into the playoffs. Unfortunately for the defenseman, he was apparently dealing with a broken foot throughout much of the postseason. The fact that it played a part in the Golden Knights getting knocked out of the playoffs is hard to argue against, but it took guts for Martinez to continue to hit the ice with a mangled foot. He actually credits the medical staff for him even being able to continue to stand during the later rounds.

“In terms of my daily routine, it was a lot of rest and staying off it, and just managing the swelling and all that,” he said. “I couldn’t have done it without our medical staff. I sound like a broken record, but they were pretty incredible. I’m very thankful to them to be able to manage something and put me in a position where I could go compete with the guys playing the best time of the year.”

#1 Mar Andre Fleury wins Vezina Trophy despite coming up short

Marc Andre Fleury was nothing short of a beast this season and led the Las Vegas Golden Knights to 26 wins in 36 games as a starter. He also had the puck shot at him 989 times this year and only allowed 71 of those to hit the net.  Fleury not only proved himself as the top goalie on the team earlier this season, but he also gave the Knights an unbeatable edge.

Fittingly, Fleury was awarded the Vezina trophy for being the best goalie in the league this season. This is the first time he has won the historic award, although he was previously a part of three championship teams. Maybe the best things do come with time?
