Last Week in Las Vegas Sports (June 21 – 27)

Las Vegas Golden Knights knocked out of the playoffs, Kyle Busch wins in Nashville, and Summerslam close to being sold out all on this week in Las Vegas sports.

#5 WWE Summerslam reportedly almost sold out

Summerslam 2021 will be held at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on August 24, and rumor has it that the event is close to being sold out. The rumor mill is already spinning on Seth Rollins vs Edge, Bobby Lashley vs Brock Lesnar, and even John Cena vs Roman Reigns.

While only two out of the three matches are first-time-ever encounters, they all are big box office draws in their own right. Seriously though, John Cena is on another level in his acting career, and bringing that kind of attention to WWE could be very lucrative. As for Edge versus Rollins, that’s going to be a dream match for older fans who grew up during Edge’s rated R superstar days. It might even manage to top the feud between Edge and Randy Orton, which played out for almost a year.

Finally, we have Brock Lesnar vs Bobby Lashley. Lashley is having the biggest run of his entire career right now. Of course, WWE has bogged it down a little with the VIP section and the horde of women always around him, but Lashley reeks of legitimacy right now. Add that to what Brock Lesnar brings to the table in terms of legitimacy, and you have a throwdown.

#4 Kyle Busch wins at Nashville for 100th Xfinity Series victory

Las Vegas native Kyle Busch notched his 100th Xfinity Series win last weekend at Nashville Speedway and while winning is nothing new for the younger Busch brother, it still represents a huge milestone in his career. In fact, between outright dominating the Xfinity Series for almost a decade, and even managing to win after NASCAR clamped down with restrictions, this milestone is nothing short of amazing.  Furthermore, it also means that Busch won’t be racing in that series much longer.

For those that don’t know,  Kyle Busch promised reporters and fans that he would retire from the Xfinity Series after winning his 100th race on the course. Now, Busch is already being forced to break that promise after signing on for two more races, but one has to remember that he is simply fulfilling his obligations to his sponsors. With that being said and all Busch has accomplished throughout his time in the Xfinity Series, it will be quite sad to see him retire. It will be great news for the younger drivers though, who are absolutely craving the spotlight.

“I remember growing up as a kid watching Mark Martin win every week and wondering, ‘Can anybody beat this guy?'” Busch admitted after winning at Nashville speedway for the first time in over a decade. “And that was 49 wins,” Busch said. “So I just can’t fathom, right now myself, what 100 really means. It’s certainly something I will look back on once all is said and done and I’m in a rocking chair somewhere.”

#3 Carl Nassib becomes first openly gay NFL player

The Las Vegas Raiders’ Carl Nassib came out as the NFL’s first active openly gay player in history. Interestingly enough, Nassib saw a huge jump in jersey sales after the announcement, becoming the league’s top jersey seller. Whether that continues to be the case or not remains to be seen, but he definitely has fans behind him on this.

“What’s up, people,” Nassib said Monday in a video on Instagram “I’m Carl Nassib. I’m at my house here in West Chester, Pennsylvania. I just wanted to take a quick moment to say that I’m gay. I’ve been meaning to do this for a while now, but I finally feel comfortable enough to get it off my chest. I just think that representation and visibility are so important. actually, hope that one-day videos like this and the whole coming out process are just not necessary. But until then, I’m going to do my best and do my part to cultivate a culture that’s accepting, that’s compassionate.”

Las Vegas Aces player, Kelsey Plum, has been picked for the inaugural 3×3 women’s Olympic basketball team and will join some elite company in a battle to grab gold for the USA. She will join Stefanie Dolson, Allisha Gray, and Katie Lou Samuelson, who also was picked for the team after helping them gain a position in the Olympics. While Plum was originally going to be selected to play 5v5 women’s basketball, it is now being reported that she will be exclusively competing on the 3 team level.

I feel so blessed to be a part of this group, to be picked for the first time ever for 3 3 in the Olympics, to represent the USA, represent my family, I mean so many different emotions, Plum said during a video conference call on Wednesday. As a kid, you grow up dreaming of this moment and they didn t have 3 3 when I was coming up, so it was always 5-on-5. Obviously, eventually, that s something I d like to do but in the meantime, I think this is pretty freaking cool.

#1 Las Vegas Golden Knights knocked out of playoffs by Montreal Canadiens

Despite winning the opening game of their Conference Final series against the Montreal Canadiens, the Las Vegas Golden Knights have been knocked out of the playoffs after back-to-back losses. Not only was this extremely heartbreaking to fans, who wanted to see the Knights finally nab the Stanley Cup, it also hurt in a sense that they didn’t improve much on what happened last year. In fact, if you go by the numbers, the Knights only managed to win one more game in the series than they did last time. That’s not a good way to end the season and brings about more questions than answers.
