5 Biggest Las Vegas Sports Stories (Feb 15 – 21)

Did the Las Vegas Raiders accidentally reveal their 2021 starting Quarterback?

1. Las Vegas Motor Speedway to allow limited attendence

Las Vegas Motor Speedway requested a limited number of fans in attendance for the upcoming NASCAR races and got it approved earlier this week. While this measure will allow a certain number of fans to partake in the race weekend at LVMS, they will have to undergo temperature checks, maintain social distancing, and have their face coverings on at all times. The vastly popular garage area will also be unavailable during the race weekend, which is where NASCAR drivers can see their fans up front and in person.

We re excited that we ll have race fans in attendance for all three days of our March 5-7 NASCAR Weekend, said LVMS president Chris Powell.  Given what our state and community have been through in the face of this terrible pandemic, we can only hope that this announcement represents some semblance of a return to normalcy.

2. Las Vegas Aces trade Lindsay Allen to Indiana Fever

The Las Vegas Aces signed Lindsay Allen last season to help make up for the void left by Kelsey Plum and Liz Cambage but ended up trading her this week to the Indiana  Fever. The Aces will receive a 2nd round pick as a result and probably have to search for a decent bench player. Although Allen only managed 3.3 points, 2.4 assists, and 1.1 rebounds, someone will have to make up for those numbers in her absence. That’s why the Aces might want to look into a trade or free agency to keep some depth on their bench.

3. Trent Brown to be cut by the Las Vegas Raiders?

Believe it or not, there was a time when Trent Brown was one of the hottest free agents in the NFL. He even signed a 14 million dollar deal with the Las Vegas Raiders to bring a solid anchor to their defense. Unfortunately for the Raiders, however, Brown has been shockingly inconsistent and doesn’t show any signs of getting better. In fact,  some NFL insiders believe that Brown doesn’t care about football, and is only looking out for himself.

With that in mind, Brown seemingly made things worse this week by posting a picture of himself on Instagram with the caption, “the one on the back is the one who matters” Now, some believe that this was a shot at the Raiders organization, which could very well be true. Still, all it did was make him a sitting duck to be cut in the offseason. Furthermore, with his 14 million dollar price tag, and the changes the Raiders need to make on defense, Brown could be as good as gone after what he pulled.

4. NFL insider predicts Marcus Mariota goes to the New England Patriots

ESPN insider, Field Gates predicted who will be the starter for all 32 NFL teams this week, and one of the more surprising ones was Marcus Mariota as the starter for the New England Patriots. Not only would this mean that Derek Carr’s most suitable backup would be gone, forcing the organization to look elsewhere, it will also likely mean the end of Cam Newton’s days as a starter in New England. Of course, Marcus Mariota is extremely talented and should be a starter, but can the Raiders risk losing him with how skeptical some fans are of Derek Carr?

“The Patriots are among a group of teams that are too far from the top of the draft order to be a likely landing spot for the top-draft-prospect quarterbacks, meaning we’re examining other veteran options who could be logical fits,” writes Yates.  “While a Cam Newton return isn’t totally ruled out, it’s an unlikely option. The 27-year-old Mariota is under contract for one more year with the Raiders but carries a cap charge of $10.725M, an unlikely tab for them to pay for a backup in a cap-tightened year. Be it via a trade or cut, Mariota could find a new home this offseason … and the Patriots are a logical fit.”

5. Derek Carr not for say according to Raiders

Some might be upset to learn that Derek Carr has a high likelihood of being the Las Vegas Raiders starter in 2021, and a new report by Jim Ayellow from the Indystar seems to prove it. In fact, the Indianapolis Colts reportedly shopped around for a quarterback and inquired about trading for Carr. Unfortunately for the Colts, the Raiders made it clear that Carr wasn’t for sale.

Again, some will be angry with this decision, but Carr really does seem to deserve one more shot at the starting job in Vegas.
