5 Worst Crashes of Kurt Busch’s NASCAR Career

Las Vegas native Kurt Busch has taken a lot of licks throughout his 21-year career, but these are definitely his worst ones.

1. Kurt Busch spun out by Jimmy Spencer

It was the 2002 Brickyard 400, and Kurt Busch was trying to charge to the front of the field after a bad qualifying effort. The only problem with that was Jimmy Spencer, who took issue with Busch over previous incidents and spun him into the wall. The suddenness of the crash was jarring and really made you jump.

What made the confrontation even crazier was that Kurt Busch actually waited for Spencer to come by during the pace lap and jumped towards his car. The two never made contact, but Busch made sure Spencer saw him.

2. Kurt Busch runs into Jeff Burton at Bristol.

While Bristol Motor speedway might be considered a short track by many longtime fans, it has produced some of the most bizarre incidents in history. Of course, one can expect nothing less from a venue labeled Thunder Valley, but it gets dangerous out there sometimes. Unfortunately for Kurt Busch, he found that out the hard way when he literally ran into Jeff Burton during a wreck.

The incident unfolded when Jimmie Johnson accidentally gets under Burton and sends him spiraling towards the inside wall. Gordon gave the inside wall a nice smack before being sent back onto the course and right in the way of Kurt Busch.

3. Kurt Busch hits the wall twice

Kurt Busch s incident with Robby Gordon at Bristol wasn t the only time the former champion was just an innocent bystander. In fact, Kurt Busch was running in the top-5 when his then-teammate, Clint Bowyer, wrecked hard into the inside wall. The car would come careening back on track just in time for Kurt Busch to hit the thing head-on.

Busch s car looked absolutely totaled after the incident, and he was eventually forced to get out of the car due to smoke billowing from the cockpit. Busch even looked shaken a little when he exited the car, which shows the kind of energy involved in this crash. It was honestly just a gut-punch kind of moment for everyone in the sport.

4. Kurt Busch takes a wild ride at the 2020 fall Talladega race.

There have been some wild wrecks at restrictor-plate tracks like Daytona and Talladega in the past, but Kurt Busch s 2020 incident belongs in the top-10 worst lists. It all started when Busch was side by side with 7-time Cup Series Champion Jimmie Johnson, and the two drivers were not giving an inch to each other.  Unfortunately for Johnson, he was too slow for a hard-charging Clint Bowyer, who got him loose with a tap in the bumper.

And even more unfortunate for Kurt Busch, Jimmie Johnson suddenly swung his nose into the door of Kurt Busch s car, which sent him into the wall. Believe it or not, the impact was enough to send Busch airborne for a few brief seconds. He even ended up hitting several cars on his way back down.

5. Kurt Busch takes another Talladega tumble

You might be asking yourself, what could be worse than going airborne at a superspeedway and landing on several cars? While that was quite a feat pulled off by Busch in 2020, it actually wasn’t the first time something like this had happened to him. Beyond that, his wreck at the 2013 Talladega race was so much worse! Think about it! Between Kurt Busch’s car being turned so suddenly, to the violent way it flipped end over end for several feet, it was just a worst-case scenario.

Busch was lucky he walked away from this one without injuries and lived to race another day.
