5 Biggest Las Vegas Sports Stories (Jan 11-17)

Mark Davis buys the Las Vegas Aces, the Raiders name a new defensive coordinator and the Golden Knights open their season with a win over the Anaheim Ducks. Join us as we break down this week in Las Vegas sports.

1. Kurt Busch takes part in another next gen test.

NASCAR Cup Series driver, Kurt Busch, stepped back into the sport s next gen car for a test session at Daytona International Speedway this week. Busch was tapped alongside Martin Truex Jr to run a test session back in December at Charlotte Motr Speedway., which Busch described as a very interesting experience. He also seemed to like the feel of the car more.

“With the sequential gearbox, that s the most fun,” Busch said. “I love shifting through the gears… t s not your typical H-pattern that we have had. So, this gearbox is fun to drive. The brakes are much bigger, and the car can stop a lot quicker.”

2. Gus Bradley becomes Raiders new defensive coordinator.

It s no secret that defense was one of the biggest problems facing the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020, forcing them to eventually fire defensive coordinator Paul Guenther and put Rob Marinelli in on an interim basis. Now, however, the Raiders have tapped Gus Bradley to become their new defense coordinator.

Bradley has experience as former head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars and as a defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams. It might take an adjustment period for Bradley to get the hang of things, but this team could go far if they manage to avoid too many injuries next year.

“The style that you should see is a team that plays with heroic effort, great enthusiasm, great toughness and a defense that plays smart,” Bradley said when asked about what he is looking for in his new defense. “That is our key. That’s the style. Now, if you just said, ‘Hey, what is our nonnegotiable?’ That is fast, physical and we’ve got to find a way to get the ball.”

3. Mark Davis buys the Las Vegas Aces pending approval

What s next for the Las Vegas Aces? While things looked dark after getting swept in the WNBA Finals to the Seattle Storm, they could still have a bright future ahead of them. In fact, between Kelsey Plum and Liz Cambage returning to the team, and Mark Davis buying the team, you could say that the sky is the limit here.

I am excited to announce that I have entered into an agreement to purchase the Las Vegas franchise in the WNBA from MGM Resorts International, Davis said in a statement put out by the Aces. I will have more to say once I receive official approval from the WNBA Board of Governors and have had a chance to speak with the players, coaches and administrators of the team.

4. Las Vegas could get NBA expansion team.

Believe it or not, the NBA is looking into the idea of allowing two expansion teams to join the league but are putting up a 2.5-billion-dollar price tag to get the deal done. If that price stays where it is, it will be considered the most expensive team in North American sports history.

Early speculation points to Seattle getting the first expansion slot and the second one being between Kansas City and Las Vegas. Now, having pro basketball would be huge, but can Vegas match the league’s high price?

5. Las Vegas Golden Knights win in opener over Ducks

What could be better than the Golden Knights winning their opening game of the season? Winning a championship, of course, but baby steps. Fortunately for the Golden Knights, a 5-2 victory over the Ducks shows they are an offensive force on the ice and can keep teams from scoring. In fact, Robin Lehner made 20 saves throughout the game.

As if that wasn t enough to get everyone excited about the upcoming season, Max Pacioretty, Jonathon Marchessualt, Tomas Nosek, Alex Tuch and Mark Stone all scored against the Ducks.
