Living Nativity in Boulder City
Boulder City United Methodist Church is hosting the Boulder City Luminaria and Las Posadas on Thursday, December 1. The event will feature a living Nativity scene, as well as performances by local school choirs and other solo singers. Hot chocolate will be available to get everyone into the Christmas spirit.
The Tradition of Luminaria & Las Posadas
Luminaria refers to traditional Mexican lanterns, typically made out of a paper bag with a candle inside, that are set outside during Christmas time. On Christmas Eve, these represent lighting the way for Christ’s birth, as the star of Bethlehem originally led the wise men. You may see them line sidewalks, driveways, and other walkways.
Las Posadas is a religious festival that is primarily celebrated in Mexico and other Latin American countries. This celebration lasts from December 16 through December 24. It honors the trek that Mary and Joseph made from Nazareth to Bethlehem in preparation for the birth of Jesus. Generally, each night people gather and walk led by an angel, symbolizing how Mary and Joseph sought shelter and safety.
