5 Things You May Not Know About the Las Vegas Raiders

Think you know your team? Even the most diehard fans of Raider nation could have trouble with these five fast facts about the team.

1. Only team to go to the playoffs in the 60, 70's and 80's

Did you know that The Las Vegas Raiders are the only team in NFL and AFL history to go to The Super Bowl in the 60s, '70s and  80s? That s a lot of consistency for one team, which likely means Al Davis and the front office had quite the hand in making team a playoff threat.  Keep in mind that they won three titles during this time and were almost constant threats in their division.

The Raiders won The AFL title for the first time in 1967 but lost The Super Bowl to the packers that year as well.  Nine years later, The Raiders would avenge that loss by winning their division and going on to defeat The Vikings for their first championship. Four years after that, The Raiders would go on to win two more championships and cement themselves as one of the most consistent teams in NFL history.

2. Most consistent team in NFL history?

Remember when The Seattle Seahawks go on about the fans being their 12th man? The person that gets the energy going and helps them do the impossible? In 1963, that man s name was Al Davis and he took the struggling Oakland Raiders from 1-13 in 1962, to 10-4 just one season later.

In fact, The Raiders would later go on to have a .667% win-loss record with Al Davis as General Manager, which still stands today as the best by an NFL team in a 30-year period.

3. Early struggles

Did you know that The Raiders had one of the most unbelievable starts to becoming an NFL team ever? It all started in 1960, when Oakland become The AFL s eighth team.

Unfortunately for The Raiders, they were faced with an uphill battle from the beginning and didn t even have their own stadium until 1966 when The Oakland Coliseum was opened. In fact, they had to play games at Kezar Stadium and Candlestick park for the first 5 years of their existence and had one of the worst records in the league during that time, going 32-49.

4. Longest superbowl hangover ever?

While we don t know if it s the longest Super  Bowl hangover ever, or if that is even possible to determine, it is worth noting that The Oakland Raiders have only had one winning season since they lost the 2002 Super Bowl to The Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In fact, they went 92-180 in that time, which is probably one of the worst records for that period in the league. Let this serve as a reminder to Raider nation that while we know that this team is capable of greatness, it is not guaranteed that we reach that level.

5. Changing names in record time

Believe it or not, Oakland wasn t always the home of The Oakland Raiders. Of course, at one point in time, they were The Los Angeles Raiders, but they had another name before The Oakland Raiders even left for Los Angeles.  In fact, the team held a "name your team" contest for fans and became known as The Oakland Senors.

The team was then turned into a laughingstock by the rest of the league, which prompted a name change only a few days later.
