Everything You Need to Know About the Raiders Before Preseason

The Las Vegas Raiders preseason is almost here, and we have a lot of questions. Will Jimmy Garoppollo pass his physical? Will Joshua Jacobs stay with the team? Time to break it all down.

#5 What's going on with Hunter Renfrow?

While there have been rumors all offseason that the Las Vegas Raiders wanted to trade Hunter Renfrow, it appears this is not true. Tashaan Reed of the Athletic claims: "The Raiders haven't been shopping Renfrow and haven't received any trade offers for him..."

The team did, however, sign Jakobi Myers to a long-term contract. They also acquired Michael Mayer in the draft, which could lead to little need for Renfrow.

#4 Jimmy Garoppollo left off of the top 15 quarterback list

Jimmy Garoppollo is not a guaranteed starter in 2023, and it looks like league officials are taking notice. A recent NFL coach/decision-maker poll left Garoppollo off the top 15 Quarterback list. The poll does list his predecessor, Derek Car,r as an honorable mention.

The ranking might be a reflection of Garoppolo's injury history and his unknown status for 2023.

#3 The quarterback situation looks wide open with Garoppolo's injury

Jimmy Garoppollo passed his physical, but he's still an injury risk. If he falls apart, the preseason battle will be between Brian Hoyer, Aiden O'Conner, and Chase Gabers. Some speculate that O'Conner will win the job, which could be an interesting direction. The move also might have big implications on Josh Mcdaniels' career.

The Raiders' backs are against the wall this season, and Josh McDaniels will most likely be on the hot seat as well. That's why McDaniels will probably avoid making O'Conner the starter and go toward veteran experience. Hoyer is the best option in this regard, with over 14 years of play in the league.

Unfortunately, Hoyer doesn't have much to show for his 14 years of experience. For example, his best season record as a starter is 7-6 as a part of the 2014 Cleveland Browns. Hoyer completed 242 of 438 passes for 3336 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.

#2 The preseason schedule will be interesting to watch

A lot is riding on the 2023 preseason for the Las Vegas Raiders, and they don't have the easiest of opponents. The preseason action starts with the Raiders taking on the San Francisco 49ers at Reliant Stadium. Las Vegas then moves on to face the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium.

The preseason finale for the Raiders is a matchup against the Dallas Cowboys in week three. This is another away game for Las Vegas, but it could serve as a test of their toughness. It will also give fans a good idea of who could be the starting quarterback heading into week one.

#1 The Joshua Jacobs situation still isn't resolved

[caption id="attachment_34582" align="alignnone" width="1024"]Las Vegas Raiders, Source. YouTube.[/caption]

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Joshua Jacobs will sit out of training camp after negotiations with the Las Vegas Raiders failed. The organization reportedly wants Jacobs to sign a $10 million franchise tag agreement, but the 2022 leading rusher didn't agree.

He instead wants to stay with the Raiders on a long-term agreement, but both sides have come nowhere close to a deal. Now that Jacobs will most likely sit out the preseason, the pressure falls on Brittain Brown and Zamir White to make a statement in the run game.

Otherwise, the Raiders will be forced to sign Jacobs to a more long-term deal or look for another free-agent running back. Both outcomes have their ups and downs and could create a ripple effect on the entire season. It will be very interesting to see how this all plays out.
