The resort initially had an intense pirate theme that made it stand out from others. Here is a brief history of how this beautiful property came to be:

Early Years

The initial plan when setting up the resort was not to construct an independent entity. The new complex was supposed to be an addition to the Mirage. However, this changed, and the property became a separate resort, drawing its inspiration from the Treasure Island novel and hence the name, which remains the same today.

It was a massive project that cost more than four hundred million dollars before it finally opened its doors to the public in 1993. There were more Treasure Island-themed features back then than now, but it was not so popular. Over time, recent renovations included changes that made it the modern version as we know it today. Some of the earliest plans to remodel the property were in 1999. They included upgrading the rooms and adding new features like the lobby. By 2003, the total for the renovations had cumulatively reached $150 million.

The initial plan had a more family-oriented approach, hence the Treasure Island theme, an arcade for kids, and a huge fun sign to attract customers. However, in the early 2000s, MGM Grand inc, the then management, initiated plans to change things to have a more mature appeal. A notable change was removing the skull sign from the property replaced by a newer one. The older one with the pirate theme went to the Neon museum as a donation. The offerings of the hotel also changed to suit the new target market. For example, a new pirate show of near-Broadway standard as opposed to the previous version, which was more juvenile.

Change in Management

Entrepreneur Phil Ruffin bought the hotel and casino in 2009, taking up full ownership. He acquired the property for about $775 million.

Further Expansion

In 2013, the property expanded to include a shopping and entertainment center that opened two years later. The new complex is what now hosts a CVS outlet, the Marvel Avengers Station exhibit, and more. It took the place of the famed pirate show. The ships are still there, however.

One of the notable occurrences at Treasure Island is the attempted assassination of Donald Trump in 2016, who was a presidential candidate. It is also home to the show Mystere, an outstanding production by Cirque du Soleil.

Later, the management engaged in plans to have the hotel under the Radisson Hotel Group without altering the name or signage of the premises.
