Brush up on your Las Vegas sports history as we count down 5 sports facts you may not know!
#1 This is where CM Punk unleashed his infamous pipebomb
There's something about going on national television and airing your grievances with your employer that makes for great television. A perfect example of this was
CM Punk's infamous pipebomb in Las Vegas, where the Second City Saint proceeded to tear into the company as a whole. He essentially blended reality and fiction as he talked about how much he resented the company, which lead to some memorable moments. The promo got so heated that WWE had to cut Punk's microphone before he could finish. He even berated the fans for not buying his merchandise. It's honestly something that could only happen in Vegas.
#4 Jimmie Johnson holds record for most wins at Las Vegas Motor Speedway
Don't the beard fool you, Jimmie Johnson is one hell of a NASCAR driver and has seven Championships to prove it. He also amassed 83 Cup Series victories, which was enough to put move him past Dale Earnhardt in all-time wins. While he would never surpass his mentor, Jeff Gordon, in Cup Series victories, he would go on to hold quite a few records of his own. One such record occurred at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, where Johnson holds the crown for most wins at the racetrack.
There's another record in there, as Johnson was the only driver to win three straight races at the Speedway. In fact, Johnson won the 2005, 2006, and 2007 races at the track. Keep in mind that this is when Johnson was nearing the peak of his NASCAR career and becoming an untouchable entity. In the end, Johnson would secure his final win at the speedway in 2010, ultimately helping him towards his record 5th straight championship.
#3 Las Vegas Golden Knights hold playoff record
The year was 2017, and Las Vegas had just gotten its first NHL hockey team, the Las Vegas Golden Knights. While expectations for the team's future were at an all-time high, especially with Las Vegas being a huge tourist destination already, everyone expected them to go through a feeling-out period. Fortunately for the Knights, that process didn't take long, and they eventually accumulated a record of 51 wins to 24 losses. The record was good enough to lift them into the playoffs, where they would go on to do some of their best work.
In fact, the Las Vegas Golden Knights won 13 playoff games that season, and while they would be defeated in the Stanley Cup Finals by the Washington Capitals, they hold the record for most playoff wins in an inaugural season.
#2 Las Vegas Aces made the playoffs twice in three seasons
Believe it or not, the Las Vegas Aces are one of the strongest sports organizations the city has. Not only is that evident by the way they absolutely dominated the 2020 season before losing to the SeattleStorm, but also due to their record of two playoff appearances in three years. Unfortunately for the Aces, they are 5-8 in the playoffs but actually made it to the finals last year for the first time in organization history. Between Mark Davis, the owner of the team, and their lucrative free-agent signings over the offseason, they will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.
#1 Who scored the first touchdown at Allegiant stadium
Who scored the first touchdown at Allegiant stadium? Believe it or not, the question has two answers based on how you frame it. For example, if you were to ask for the first touchdown at the Stadium, the honor would go to Saints running back Alvin Kamura. If you were to ask which Las Vegas Raider was the first to bring it to the house, that distinction goes to Alec Engold. He, too, scored a running touchdown, a promising start to what would become a pretty underwhelming season.
