Between Nelson Agholor bad mouthing his own team in the locker room, and another Raider set to retire in March, it was a wild week in Las Vegas sports news.
1. Nelson Agholor accused of ripping teammates after Dolphins loss.
Nelson Agholor signed a one-year deal with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020 and while the move didn t put the team on a Super Bowl trajectory, he was a decent weapon. If the Raiders could just get a few more pieces together in their receiving core, they could be on the verge of having a super team.
Unfortunately for Raider Nation, new allegations surfaced this week that Agholor ripped into his teammates after their Week 16 loss against the Dolphins. People say he stormed into the locker room and said his teammates were selfish and didn t work hard enough, and that they had quit against the Dolphins as well as in the previous two losses. He said there was no accountability in the locker room, and on winning teams players play for one another and the coaches. According to Agholor, the Raiders performance over the previous six games was unacceptable, and too many people within the team were just flat-out accepting it.
2. Jon Gruden speaks on Agholor situation
Speaking of the very vocal Nelson Agholor, his comments coming to light also spurred the media to ask questions about his future with the Raiders. The Athletic even texted Jon Gruden for an answer about his thoughts on the wide receiver. While they were initially met with silence, the coach eventually responded by claiming he "loved" Agholor.
Whether this is a ploy to keep Agholor with the Raiders or just Gruden trying to settle down the media remains to be seen.
3. Chelsea Gray to Las Vegas Aces in free agency?
While an official 2021 WNBA season hasn t been announced yet, the league is already abuzz with preseason rumors. One of the most interesting is rumor from Howard Megdal from The Next, who claims that Chelsea Gray could come to the Las Vegas Aces in 2021. Not only would this move bring some added depth to their bench, it could also help with their attempt to get back into the playoffs. The Aces might have made it to the 2020 WNBA Finals, but they got swept in three games by the Seattle Storm.
4. Las Vegas Golden Knights forced to postpone game against Los Angeles Sharks
Despite being 5-1 in their division, the Las Vegas Golden Knights got dealt a huge blow this week when four team members were quarantined due to Covid-19 safety procedures. Games were supposed to take place on the 3rd and the 5th respectively, but were postponed.
Now, the Golden Knights are scheduled to play against the Los Angeles Sharks on Friday. Of course, that depends on whether the team is able to play by that date, but the eight-day window could be enough time for everyone to get back on the ice.
5. Jason Witten to retire
Jason Witten's contract with the Las Vegas Raiders ends in March, and while the team might have wanted to bring him back for another year, it looks like the legendary tight end is ready to call it a career. Of course he already did this two years ago before coming out of retirement, but it looks like he is actually ready this time. In fact, he intends on signing a one-day contract with the Dallas Cowboys, who he has played with for 17 years. No word yet on his hall of fame prospects, but 1 would have to imagine him being a first or second ballot hall of famer due to his stats.
"A coach once told me, 'The legacy of heroes is the memory of a great name and the inheritance of a great example,'"
Witten told ESPN. "As I hang it up, I walk away knowing that for 17 seasons I gave it my absolute all. I am proud of my accomplishments as a football player on the field and the example I tried to set off of it. Football is a great game that has taught me many valuable lessons, and I look forward to passing on that knowledge to the next generation."
