Last Week in Las Vegas Sports (July 22 - 24)

The Las Vegas Raiders mock Patrick Mahomes, Kate Martin gets a big surprise, and more on the Raiders' quarterback battle. We break it all down for last week in Las Vegas sports (July 22 - 24).

#5 Kyle Busch isn't leaving RCR for Spire Motorsports

Kyle Busch is having one of the worst seasons of his  Cup Series career, and fans are hitting the panic button. He still hasn’t secured a spot in the playoffs and is falling out of contention to make the playoffs in points. This has led to rumors that Busch wants to leave  RCR for greener pastures. Some have him replacing Corey Lajoie at Spire Motorsports next season to start over again. This scenario would require him to get out of his two-year contract, which doesn’t seem very likely. One NASCAR expert states that the rumor is false.

“No. I don’t expect Kyle Busch to be in a Cup car at Spire next year from the people I talked to today,” NASCAR journalist  Pockrass said via X. “Kyle Busch has a contract with RCR for next year and while never say never, that is where I see him next year.”

Busch has zero wins, two top-fives, and six top-tens in 22 races this season. He only has a few opportunities left to make the playoffs.

#4 Las Vegas Aces’ Kate Martin reaches top five in jersey sales

[caption id="attachment_58756" align="alignnone" width="1024"]Las Vegas Aces, Las Vegas sports, Kate Matin, Las Vegas sports news, Source. The Sporting Tribune[/caption]

Kate Martin is becoming more than just a name on the Las Vegas Aces roster sheet. She now has one of the top five-selling jerseys in the league. The WNBA released its jersey sales numbers heading into the Olympic break, and Martin sits fourth! She is also one spot ahead of her all-star teammate, Aja Wilson, who rounded out the top five.

Currently, Martin’s momentum is taking a hit after an Achilles tendon injury, and there is a long way to go before she lives up to the hype.

#3 Las Vegas Raiders make fun of Patrick Mahomes

A Las Vegas Raiders fan brought a Kermit the Frog puppet with a Patrick Mahomes jersey to training camp last week, and it was pretty funny. Raiders rookie Trey Taylor ended up with the doll. He decided to mess around, with a video showing him mocking Mahomes' Kermit-like voice in front of the whole camp.

Still, Mahomes is now a three-time Super Bowl champion, while the Raiders haven’t won their division in a decade. You can't make jokes about a guy who wiped the floor with you.

"It's still early in the year, kind of. Stuff like that happens. It'll get handled when it gets handled," Mahomes said in an interview: "Everybody kind of just lets me play, I mean, they know how I am. They don't need to send me anything to keep me motivated."

#2  Las Vegas Aces sit second in power rankings heading into the break

[caption id="attachment_56013" align="alignnone" width="1024"] Las Vegas Aces[/caption]

The Las Vegas Aces are looking for their third straight WNBA championship, but it won't be easy. That is the consensus after the Aces finished the first part of the season 16-8, including several tough losses. This gives them the fifth-best record in the league and puts them fourth in the west.

Despite this, Rip City Project lists the Aces atop their midseason power rankings, putting the team behind the New York Liberty. The Aces have had a relatively down year so far, already losing more games this season than they did in all of 2023. But Wilson will right the ship when it matters most come playoff time. Until proven otherwise, the Aces remain at the top of the league.

#1 Aidan O'Connell takes a step backward in Las Vegas Raiders training camp

[caption id="attachment_58751" align="alignnone" width="819"]Las Vegas Raiders, Aidan O'Connell, Las Vegas sports, Source. Las Vegas Raiders[/caption]

The NFL season is less than two months away, and the Las Vegas Raiders still don’t have a starting quarterback. While Aidan O’Connell is making improvements, the Raiders don’t seem convinced.  They even had Gardner Minshew take first-team reps last week after a bad showing by O’Connell.

According to  ESPN, while Minshew looked sharper, "he threw a pair of red-zone interceptions in 11-on-11 drills."

These developments are interesting. Minshew is being described as sharp despite two interceptions. Turnovers on offense are a big reason why the Raiders struggled and shouldn’t be something they are happy about. None of these are a great sign for the greatest show on turf in 2024.
